Is Alex Bregman's potential return to the Red Sox in jeopardy? The upcoming 2025-26 MLB offseason is heating up, and the Boston Red Sox are still in need of a serious offensive boost to remain competitive in the American League East. The good news? The infield market is moving at a relatively slow pace. But here's where it gets interesting...
Alex Bregman, a free agent, is a top target for the Red Sox. The team is hoping to reunite with him. Imagine the possibilities: a right-handed bat, solid defense, and years of experience to bolster their batting order. He meshed well with the club last season.
But the Red Sox aren't alone in their pursuit. According to a New Year's Day report from MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks are aggressively vying for Bregman's services.
And this is the part most people miss... Feinsand believes a reunion with Boston is still possible, but for many fans, it should be a priority. After all, the Red Sox haven't signed a major league free agent this offseason, and they traded Rafael Devers last season, seemingly to make room for Bregman.
Insider Mark Feinsand reports that the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks are the most aggressive teams in the race for Alex Bregman, potentially leaving the Red Sox in the dust.
The Blue Jays and Diamondbacks each have compelling reasons to attract Bregman. Toronto and Arizona are in highly competitive divisions and have both been to the World Series in the last three seasons. The Jays recently signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14-year, $500 million extension and Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million deal. Their commitment to winning is clear.
Bregman signing with Toronto would be a complete disaster for the Red Sox, as he'd become a division rival, facing them in four series per year. Even letting him go to any other team would be a disappointment after the Devers trade and the promises made.
The Red Sox will need to step up their game to sign any top free agent. Their reluctance to spend money won't cut it in the AL East, especially with the Blue Jays and Orioles flexing their financial muscles.
In 2025, Bregman proved he belonged in Boston, despite a less-than-stellar second half. He's the best all-around third baseman available, and the Red Sox desperately need his defensive and offensive consistency.
What do you think? Should the Red Sox do everything they can to sign Bregman, or would you be okay with him going elsewhere? Let's discuss in the comments!
