The music world has lost a quiet giant. Greg Brown, the founding guitarist of Cake and the mastermind behind their iconic hit 'The Distance,' has passed away. While his name might not have been as widely recognized as some of his contemporaries, his impact on the band's unique sound and their rise to fame is undeniable.
Cake, the Sacramento-based alternative rock outfit, announced Brown's death on social media, attributing it to a brief illness. Their statement poignantly highlighted his crucial role in shaping the band's early identity: “Greg was an integral part of Cake’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed.”
Brown, alongside frontman John McCrea, multi-instrumentalist Vince DiFiore, and others, formed Cake in 1991. While McCrea was the primary songwriter, Brown's contributions were significant. He co-wrote tracks on their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity (1994), and its follow-up, Fashion Nugget (1996), which featured the breakout single 'The Distance,' entirely penned by Brown.
Interestingly, Brown himself initially didn't see the potential in 'The Distance' as a single. In a 2021 interview with Billboard, he admitted, “I liked the way it sounded and everything, but I thought [Fashion Nugget’s] ‘Frank Sinatra’ was a much stronger choice for the single.” But here's where it gets controversial: the record label disagreed, choosing 'The Distance,' and history proved them right. The song became a smash hit, propelling Cake into the mainstream.
And this is the part most people miss: Despite his success with Cake, Brown left the band after the Fashion Nugget tour, citing personal reasons and a desire to explore other musical avenues. He went on to form Deathray with fellow ex-Cake member Victor Damiani and even collaborated with Weezer's Rivers Cuomo on the short-lived project Homie.
Brown's musical journey wasn't limited to Cake. He released two albums with Deathray in the early 2000s and even reunited with Cake in 2011, contributing guitar to 'Bound Away' on their album Showroom of Compassion.
