The Panthers' Linebacker Legacy: A New Chapter Awaits
At the recent NFL Combine, former Panthers legend and now General Manager, Dan Morgan, dropped a bombshell. He's on a mission to "attack" the linebacker position, and he's not holding back.
But here's where it gets controversial... Morgan, a former Pro Bowl middle linebacker himself, knows a thing or two about leadership and playmaking. And when he talks about "attacking" a position, it's not just about filling a gap on the field. It's about finding the right person to lead, inspire, and elevate the entire team.
"We're looking for leaders, playmakers, and culture fits," Morgan emphasized. "Someone who can stand in front of that huddle and command respect."
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about talent. It's about finding the right personality, the right leader, and the right fit for the team's culture.
With a young group already under contract, led by Trevin Wallace and Bam Martin-Scott, the Panthers have an opportunity to reshape their linebacker unit. Christian Rozeboom and Krys Barnes, both unrestricted free agents in March, could open up some exciting possibilities.
Morgan, with his rich lineage at the position, understands the importance of this role. From Sam Mills to Micheal Barrow, Jon Beason, and the legendary Luke Kuechly, he's part of a proud tradition.

"We'll definitely find a linebacker and an edge rusher we like," Morgan said. "We're weighing our options and adjusting our plan based on free agency."
The defense, which made significant strides last year, still needs playmakers. And there are some solid middle linebackers who could make an immediate impact, like Devin Lloyd from Jacksonville, Devin Bush from Cleveland, or Nakobe Dean from Philadelphia.
At pass-rusher, it gets expensive, but Morgan is open to investment, just like in previous years with players like Robert Hunt, Damien, Tre'von, and Turk. He's not afraid to swing for the fences, as shown by last year's attempt to acquire Milton Williams.
For Morgan, finding the right person to fill the linebacker position, someone who embodies the qualities of himself and Kuechly, is key. And as he congratulated Kuechly on his Hall of Fame induction, it's clear he has a deep respect for the qualities that make a true leader.
"Couldn't go to a more deserving guy," Morgan said of Kuechly. "He's the ultimate competitor, with incredible instincts and playmaking ability. And off the field, he's an exceptional person."
