A Close Call with an Arboreal Ant: A Man's Story of Survival
In a recent incident, a man narrowly escaped a potentially life-threatening situation after being bitten by an arboreal ant. But here's where it gets controversial: should we be more aware of these seemingly harmless creatures and their potential dangers?
Chan Kok Hoe, 48, had a harrowing experience when he was bitten by an ant while tending to his garden. He knew something was wrong almost immediately, as his body reacted with dizziness and a rapid onset of redness. Chan's quick thinking and knowledge of his own body saved him from a potentially fatal anaphylactic episode.
"I felt like I was in a race against time," Chan recalled. "I knew I had to act fast, or things could have taken a turn for the worse."
He rushed to a nearby clinic, only to be turned away due to technical issues. Undeterred, Chan sought help at another clinic, where he received the life-saving treatment he needed. An antihistamine and steroid injection helped stabilize his condition, preventing a full-blown anaphylactic reaction.
Arboreal ants, or semut Selangor/semut Ipoh as they are locally known, may seem innocuous, but their bite can pack a powerful punch. Entomologist Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Hafiz Ab Majid warns that these ants, specifically the bi-coloured tetraponera rufonigra species, can pose a serious threat to humans, especially those with underlying sensitivities.
"The danger is akin to bee or hornet stings," Abdul Hafiz explained. "While most people will experience pain and swelling, for some, the venom can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure and breathing difficulties."
And this is the part most people miss: these ants often nest in trees near public spaces, playgrounds, and parks, increasing the risk of encounters. Abdul Hafiz recommends removing colonies from such areas to ensure public safety.
"Local councils should consider this a priority," he urged. "Using insecticides to remove these colonies can help prevent unfortunate incidents like Chan's."
Chan's experience serves as a reminder that even the smallest creatures can have a big impact. He hopes his story will encourage others to take arboreal ant bites seriously and seek medical attention promptly if they experience any adverse reactions.
"A few minutes can be the difference between life and death," Chan emphasized. "Don't ignore the signs."
