Kenta Maeda's Return to Japan: A New Chapter with the Rakuten Eagles (2026)

A Baseball Legend Returns Home: Maeda's Journey Back to Japan

In a thrilling turn of events, veteran pitcher Kenta Maeda has expressed his excitement about rejoining the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league with the Rakuten Eagles. This move marks a significant chapter in Maeda's career, and he's ready to soar once again.

Maeda, now 37, began his professional journey with the Hiroshima Carp in 2007, shining brightly until 2015. Then, he embarked on a decade-long adventure across the Pacific, playing for three prestigious MLB teams: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, and Detroit Tigers. During this time, he achieved three remarkable seasons with double-digit wins.

"The feeling is one of pure exhilaration. I chose the Eagles, knowing it might be my final team," Maeda shared at the Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi, the Eagles' beloved home.

Despite spending most of the previous season in the minors, Maeda revealed a resurgence in confidence towards the end. "The Eagles recognized this, and their faith in me as a starter is a huge boost," he added.

Maeda's NPB statistics speak volumes: a stellar 2.39 ERA and 97-67 record in 218 games for the Carp. In MLB, he maintained a 4.20 ERA with 68 wins and 6 saves in 226 games. But it was more than just the numbers; Maeda learned the value of growth and challenge.

"MLB taught me the world's vastness. I encountered players better than me, forcing me to evolve annually to survive. It elevated me, both personally and professionally," he reflected.

At the Eagles, Maeda will don his iconic No. 18 shirt, previously worn by another veteran, Masahiro Tanaka. "Tanaka's legacy with the Eagles' No. 18 is iconic. I aim to earn my place and recognition," Maeda said, referring to the former New York Yankee now with the Yomiuri Giants.

Maeda is currently 35 wins away from the prestigious 200-win benchmark across Japan and the US. "It's a distant goal, but it motivates me," he admitted.

But here's where it gets intriguing: Will Maeda's experience and passion be enough to propel the Eagles to new heights? And what impact will his return have on the NPB league?
