Are you ready for a generational shift in the online world? It seems the internet is always evolving, and with it, the names we use to describe… well, let's just say, difficult people. Remember the infamous 'Karen'? She's been officially retired! Gen Z has spoken, and there's a new name in town.
And, as if to add a touch of irony, it's a name that resonates strongly with millennials: Jessica.
The term 'Karen' first gained traction around 2018, becoming synonymous with someone who, let's say, has a knack for escalating situations and often demands to speak to the manager. But now, the torch has been passed.
But here's where it gets controversial... While 'Jessica' seems to be the frontrunner, some argue that 'Ashley' is a more fitting replacement.
So, why Jessica? Much like Karen, which was a popular name for baby boomer girls born in the '60s, Jessica was a hugely popular name for girls born in the '80s and '90s.
According to the digital grapevine – TikTok, Reddit, and the rest of the internet – 'Jessica' now represents a specific archetype. Think of someone who loves posting lengthy social media rants about minor annoyances, is always absolutely convinced they're right, and has a fondness for phrases like, 'I'm not trying to be rude, but…'
And this is the part most people miss... One Reddit user, DaDacheBack, even proposed a family tree: 'Karen is Jessica’s mom. Jessica’s children are Caleb, Braxton, and Brayden.'
Now, what about the male equivalent? The top names for boys born in the '80s and '90s were Michael and Christopher. So, there you have it.
So, if someone playfully calls you a 'Jessica' for a minor complaint, now you're in the know.
What do you think? Is 'Jessica' the perfect successor to 'Karen'? Or should another name take the crown? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! We're eager to hear your opinions.
